Before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 1500s, all weaving in Mexico was done on a backstrap loom, like the one pictured here. In the colonial period the floor loom and the spinning wheel were introduced, which revolutionized the weaving craft. Some people still weave on a backstrap loom, and produce goods such as place mats, table runners, belts and bags.
