"Alebrijes" Mexican Woodcarvings

This type of wood carving, from the state of Oaxaca, is called an "albrije" (pronounced ah-lay-bree-hay). These depict fantastical animals and are painted in bright colors and vivid patterns. They are usually carved from the wood of the copal tree.

Two villages in Oaxaca are particularly renowned for their production of wood carvings: San Martin Tilcajete and Arrazola.
