The River Café is set by the scenic Rio Cuale that runs through the historic heart of Puerto Vallarta. By day, this café/restaurant is a tranquil open-air haven hidden among lush tropical foliage by the banks of the river. By night it becomes a romantic, candlelit scene frequented by lovestruck couples.

In spite of the white linen tablecloths, the feel is fairly casual thanks to terracotta tiled floors, a thatched ceiling and a cheerful ochre and aquamarine color scheme.

Breakfasts include American favorites like waffles and hot cakes along with traditional Mexican specialties like chilaquiles and molletes. The espresso coffee is good and strong and there’s a selection of smoothies and fresh juices. Lunches are casual affairs, with burgers, salads and Mexican dishes like enchiladas and fajitas dominating. Dinner steps things up a notch while taking a wander through global cuisine: the menu features everything from Thai-style mussels to Filet Mignon.

The service at River Café is friendly and efficient, and the ambiance is pretty unbeatable. Book the extra romantico white-curtained gazebo table reached via a little bridge and set right over the river.
