Mexico's topography is marked by three main mountain ranges: the Sierra Madre Occidental in the west, the Sierra Madre Oriental in the east and the Cordillera Neovolcánica in the center. There are lowlands along the coasts and in the Yucatan Peninsula and high plateau in the center of the country.

The highest peak in Mexico is the Pico de Orizaba, on the border between the states of Veracruz and Puebla. At 16,144 feet, it is ranked the seventh highest peak in the world. This is just one of three volcanoes that have permanent snow and glaciers in Mexico, the other two are Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.
