On a recent trip to Teotitlan with a group of 7 people we stopped for lunch at Tlamanalli. The specialty here is traditional Zapotec food. On arrival one of the Mendoza sisters, dressed in the traditional manner with her braids wrapped up on her head, presented us each with a complimentary shot of mezcal, accompanied by pumpkin seeds, lime wedges and chile salt.
While waiting for our meal, we were served baskets of blue corn chips and individual side dishes of delicious guacamole. From the menu of three options, we ordered the squash blossom soup with squash and a quesadilla; black mole (a chicken dish with a rich sauce made with chile and chocolate) served with rice and beans; and seguesa (a pre-hispanic dish of chicken in tomato sauce with cornmeal). For dessert there was a choice of ices, rice pudding and nicuatole, a rich corn custard (more custardy than the gelatin-like version that is sold in the streets of Mexico). We also enjoyed the cafe de olla. The bill was $140 USD. For traditional Mexican food in a small village the price seemed high.
