H1N1 Travel Tips

Avoid H1N1 (Swine Flu) on Your Mexican Vacation

By , About.com Guide

Here are some simple steps you should take if you will be traveling to Mexico during the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak:
  • Register your trip with your country's embassy or consulate. This will make it easier for consular officers to provide you with assistance in case of an emergency.

  • Make sure your travel health insurance provides adequate coverage in case of swine flu. See: Will My Travel Insurance Policy Cover Swine Flu?

  • Stay informed about new developments in the swine flu epidemic. See our timeline of Mexico's swine flu outbreak for updates.

  • Allow for delays in airports due to health screening.

  • Wash your hands frequently using soap and water (see how to wash your hands), or use hand sanitizer gel when there is no soap and water available.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and dispose of the tissue immediately following use. If you don't have a tissue at hand, cover your coughs and sneezes with your arm (the inside of your elbow) rather than your hand.

  • When settling in to your hotel room you can use anti-bacterial wipes to clean off surfaces and the TV remote control (be sure to use one wipe per surface, otherwise you may just spread germs around).

  • If you're feeling ill, don't travel.

  • See a doctor if you don't feel well, especially if you have a fever, and be sure to mention any recent travel.

      Items to bring with you:

      • Hand sanitizer gel
      • Anti-bacterial wipes
      • Tissues
