- Register your trip with your country's embassy or consulate. This will make it easier for consular officers to provide you with assistance in case of an emergency.
- Make sure your travel health insurance provides adequate coverage in case of swine flu. See: Will My Travel Insurance Policy Cover Swine Flu?
- Stay informed about new developments in the swine flu epidemic. See our timeline of Mexico's swine flu outbreak for updates.
- Allow for delays in airports due to health screening.
- Wash your hands frequently using soap and water (see how to wash your hands), or use hand sanitizer gel when there is no soap and water available.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and dispose of the tissue immediately following use. If you don't have a tissue at hand, cover your coughs and sneezes with your arm (the inside of your elbow) rather than your hand.
- When settling in to your hotel room you can use anti-bacterial wipes to clean off surfaces and the TV remote control (be sure to use one wipe per surface, otherwise you may just spread germs around).
- If you're feeling ill, don't travel.
- See a doctor if you don't feel well, especially if you have a fever, and be sure to mention any recent travel.
