Huatulco, like Cancun and Ixtapa, is one of the areas that was chosen by FONATUR (Mexico's National Trust Fund for Tourism Development) for development as a resort area. Works began in the 1980s, with plans to leave a great part of the area undeveloped. The result is a modern resort area surrounded by unspoiled lush vegetation. Huatulco's nine bays, some of them completely virgin, offer a variety of beach experiences.
