Residents and visitors in the Yucatan Peninsula are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Rina, which is likely to hit Cancun and the Riviera Maya on Thursday. Original reports forecast Rina hitting Mexico's coast as a category 3 or 4 storm, but along its route the hurricane has weakened, and on Wednesday afternoon was downgraded to a category 1 storm. Rina is expected to weaken more as it nears land, however the storm is forecast to remain a hurricane as it sweeps towards some of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations. According to the National Hurricane Center, a hurricane warning is in effect for the Northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from north of Punta Gruesa to San Felipe.
