Now a world renowned tourist resort receiving over thirty million visitors a year, it's difficult to believe that only 40 years ago Cancun was just a strip of forest flanked by beaches. With its stunning beaches, fine dining, luxury hotels and resorts, you could spend your whole vacation in Cancun without stepping outside the "Hotel Zone." That would be a shame, though, because the area around Cancun has plenty to offer! Check out our list of Cancun day trips for an idea of what you can do in the Cancun area.

Wow!! I hadn’t realized there had been such dramatic changes to the area in so short a time!!! Love the day trip ideas!
There is also a real submarine adventure called “Atlantis”. I have been there and it is amazing to see the underwater wonders of the Mexican Caribbean without getting wet. I used their hotel pick up service from Cancun (cheaper than going by your own!). Another escape that worths to do is to visit Merida, but it will take you 1 night out of Cancun. Weekends at Merida’s downtown are full of culture and folklore.
