The cost of getting a passport will be increasing for U.S. citizens as of next week. The passport fee for first-time applicants will increase from $100 to $135. Renewals will cost $110 as opposed to the current $75 fee. The cost of a passport card is set to increase from $45 to $50. The US passports and passport cards for adults are valid for ten years; for minors under age 16 they are valid for five years.
Since the WHTI came into effect, passports are required for travel to Mexico by air, and a passport or other WHTI-compliant document is required for travel by land or sea. The new fees will come into effect on Tuesday, July 13. So there's no better time than now to get a passport.
