This photo was taken in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca. You can get an idea of the size of these monster agave plants in comparison to the children standing next to them. The plant on the right is in bloom.
Find out some of the uses of the agave.

That is such a cool picture! I did a complete double take when I saw the kids and realized what giants those plants are.
When we were in Mexico in the early part of 2009, my husband and I hunted for agave syrup for a friend of ours who owns a bar. Apparently, you can use the stuff in drinks. Who knew? Nice to see the plant.
a cactus that has such pretty blooms =)
Happy WW!
It’s a spectacular plant. I’d heard of agave sued for sweetening in the healthfood movement but hadn’t realized it’s other uses.
Now, there is a shot that gives perspective. Really, REALLY tall plant.
Whoa, is that thing big! I knew agave grew pretty large, but never thought there were any so gigantic!
I don’t know anything about agave as a natural sweetener and health food. In my world, we know agave because it’s used to make tequila!
That is a great picture. It reminds me of the agave fields my family has in Ameca, Jalisco. I go down to visit Mexico every 2 to 3 years… they work around the clock maintaining the agave. FYI – the end result is delicious!
