Hurricane Jimena Approaching Baja California Sur

By , About.com GuideAugust 31, 2009

The state of Baja California Sur, including the resort area of Los Cabos, is bracing for Hurricane Jimena, expected to make landfall on Tuesday as a category four storm. The hurricane, which formed in the eastern Pacific southwest of Acapulco, is moving northwestward with maximum sustained winds of up to 155 miles per hour. According to the National Hurricane Center, Jimena is expected to dump accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of rain over the southern half of the Baja California Peninsula and portions of western Mexico during the next few days.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert stating that US citizens in areas likely to be affected by the hurricane who do not have access to adequate and safe shelter should consider leaving the area.

Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean cruise lines have altered the itineraries of ships that were scheduled to travel to the area, and airlines are waiving fees for passengers who are forced to reschedule their flights due to the storm.
