For many years Mexico's two major airlines dominated the country's air travel industry, keeping prices high and forcing most tourists to
travel by bus. However, in recent years several discount airlines have come on the scene, bringing fares down and making air travel in Mexico a viable option. The new airlines offer more flexibility at cheaper prices for travelers, but purchasing tickets can be rather complicated as there's no centralized system to help you find the routes and fares. You'll have to visit each airline's website to search for the information you need. Check out our list of
Mexican airlines, and read our
air travel tips for some advice about finding routes and fares on Mexican discount airlines.
An important point to keep in mind when booking your travel is that it's always a good idea to pay with a credit card. Airlines (particularly low-cost airlines) can go out of business and leave passengers stranded. If you've paid for your travel with a credit card you may be able to dispute the charge, whereas if you've paid cash, you're unlikely to have any recourse.
