Will you change your travel plans because of the swine flu?

Monday April 27, 2009
Neither the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) nor the WHO (World Health Organization) has advised against travel to Mexico due to the swine flu outbreak, although a top health official in the European Union has advised against non-essential travel to both Mexico and the United States. What do you think? Would you still travel to Mexico, or would the risk of catching swine flu cause you to change your travel plans? Answer our poll and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

There’s swine flu in many different countries now so I don’t think there’s any point in avoiding Mexico. I don’t have plans to travel, but if I did I wouldn’t change them.

My husband and I are going to Riviera Maya on May 8 for 10 days. At this time we are still planning on going.

My Sister and I and 4 other ladies have been planning a trip to Cancun. We are scheduled to leave next Monday and are up in the air about going at this time. In my opinion the risk is not really as bad as what is out there. Young people were just down there for Spring break, wouldn’t the numbers be higher if it was that bad? Anybody what parts of Mexico have been hit the worst?

We are going to the Riviera Maya May 21 and I want to change destinations. I think the US tour operators should follow the lead of Japan, Germany and the UK and suspend trips to Mexico. Too many resort workers will be exposed.

Just to add a different perspective from Francisco’s, I live in Oaxaca and things are pretty normal here, the main difference that would affect tourists is that at the moment museums and archaeological sites are closed, so there may be some limitations on visiting attractions. Fewer than half the people I see on the streets are wearing face masks.

My wife and I, and a few friend have are planning on going to Cozumel Mexico May 24th-31. We are not going to change planes. We have talk to friend that we have made over the years there via cell phone and internet, they have told us that everything is normal there and no one is getting sick! I think the whole swine flu has been blowed out of propertion! i mean remember the bird flu? and the west nile virus? that was suppost to be a big thing also. however you see it died down and u dont hear of it anymore. there are much worse things that could happen to you.

I think like most stuff on the media, this illness is getting blown out of proportion. Everyday people die from even more threatening diseases, but people don’t know about them because they don’t have the same level of media attention.
