Apply for Passport Now for Summer Travel
Tuesday April 7, 2009
If you're planning to travel to Mexico this summer, it's a good idea to apply for your passport as soon as possible. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will enter its final phase on June 1st, 2009, at which time travelers will be required to present a passport or other WHTI-compliant travel document, such as a passport card to enter Mexico by land or sea. The first phase of the WHTI, which was implemented in January 2007, required passports for all travelers entering the United States by air, and resulted in frustratingly long delays in passport processing times. In order to avoid similar setbacks, the US State Department is encouraging anyone who is planning to travel this summer to apply for a passport well ahead of time.

At the moment the US state department says they are taking approximately 3 weeks process passport applications. As it gets closer to June 1st 2009, I’m sure that time frame will start to extend.
