Hurricane Ike and Tropical Storm Lowell

Tuesday September 9, 2008
Hurricane Ike is now in the Gulf of Mexico after wreaking havoc in the Caribbean, leaving many dead and causing damage in Haiti and Cuba. Ike will likely gain strength during its passage over the Gulf over the next few days before hitting land late on Friday. Mexico has so far escaped damage from Ike, though Cancun and the northeast of the Yucatan Peninsula are experiencing thunderstorms and moderate wind. The current forecast shows Ike threatening the southern Texas coast, but the Mexican state of Tamaulipas may also be at risk.

While most eyes are on Hurricane Ike in the Gulf of Mexico, tropical storm Lowell is threatening the Pacific coast of the Baja Peninsula. A tropical storm watch is in effect along the southwestern coast of the southern Baja Peninsula from Bahia Magdalena southward to the resort area of Cabo San Lucas. Lowell is expected to weaken before hitting land late on Wednesday or early Thursday.

(1) Hurricane Ike Forecast says:

Why are the Cubans so much better at evacuating than we are? This storm pummeled their island and they’re ok. Meanwhile, 110 Texans died while fleeing Hurricane Rita (only 4 died from the storm itself).
