Tuesday August 19, 2008
Inhabitants of the municipality of Atlixco, in Puebla state, are planning to put together what they're calling el chile en nogada más grande del mundo, the "world's largest chile en nogada." One thousand five hundred poblano chiles will go into the preparation of this mega-dish, as well as 150 kg of meat and 150 kg of fruit. Fifty kg of nuts will be used in the traditional walnut sauce. The event will be held on August 23rd, starting at noon in the garden of "Carnitas el Mexicano" restaurant in Atlixco. This event is in its second year. Over 2000 people attended last year's event and organizers are hoping to increase the number to 3000 this year.
The chile en nogada is a traditional Mexican dish that was invented by Augustinian nuns in the 1800s. Read about the history of the chile en nogada.

Since moving to Mexico, this has become my most favorite meal. It is so delicious.
I’ve actually never had it because I’m vegetarian. A lot of people rave about it, though. I’ve heard there are some places where they make a vegetarian version of it - I’d love to try that sometime (even if it’s not authentic!).
