Placido Domingo to Perform in Chichen Itza

Saturday August 2, 2008
Famed tenor Placido Domingo will give a concert in the ancient Maya site of Chichén Itzá on Saturday, October 4th. In what is being billed as "The Concert of the Thousand Columns," the tenor will be accompanied by Mexican songwriter Armando Manzanero, Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez, and the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra. The event commemorates the one-year anniversary of Chichen Itza being named a Wonder of the World, and also its 20-year anniversary of being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Social Archaeological Fund of Chichén Itzá. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster Mexico.

Concerts are rarely performed in Mexico's archaeological sites, as the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which oversees Mexico's ancient sites, has concerns about site degradation. Luciano Pavarotti performed a concert in Chichén Itzá in 1997 before an audience of 17,000.
