Montezuma's Revenge and Your Vacation

Sunday June 22, 2008
A lot of people worry that a trip to Mexico will inevitably entail a bout of Montezuma's Revenge. This concern is not without warrant: according to the Centers for Disease Control, on average 30 to 50% of travelers to high-risk areas develop traveler's diarrhea (TD) during a one to two week stay. Most cases are fairly mild, but Montezuma's Revenge can still put a damper on your vacation.

Traveler's diarrhea may soon be a thing of the past, however. A new vaccine patch has been developed that when worn, protects travelers from Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, the bacteria responsible for most cases of TD. Studies show that the patch prevents over 70% of cases of traveler's diarrhea. The patch will soon enter the final phases of testing, after which it could be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

This will be great news. I haven’t been to Mexico since I was college-aged, in part because my husband is afraid of getting sick.
