Shark Attacks Off Mexico's Pacific Coast

Tuesday May 27, 2008
In the third attack in less than a month, surfer Bruce Grimes of Texas was bitten in the arm by a shark while surfing off Ixtapa's Playa Linda beach on May 24th. He managed to escape and drive himself to a hospital where he received one hundred stitches. Two other surfers were not so lucky. An American man, Adrian Ruiz of California, died after being attacked by a shark while he was surfing off Troncones beach at the end of April, and a Mexican surfer, Osvaldo Mata, died from injuries he received from a shark attack on May 23rd off Pantla beach.

Authorities are alerting residents and tourists to the attacks and advising them to stay out of the water. Marines are present on various beaches in the area to safeguard swimmers and alert them about the risks.

These shark attacks are a rarity on Mexico's Pacific coast - the last fatality that occurred due to a shark attack in the area prior to these incidents was over thirty years ago. Experts have been called in to determine the cause of the rash of attacks. It is speculated that the sharks are attracted to the area because of the presence of an abundance of giant squid and other prey that have come with unusual cold water currents caused by climate change.
