Documents for Land Border Crossing

Tuesday January 29, 2008
The official entry requirements for land border crossing between the United States and Mexico haven't changed. You need to present proof of citizenship and identification. You can do this with a passport, or by presenting a birth certificate or citizenship card and an official ID such as a drivers license. However, those of you who cross the border frequently probably know that crossing the border into Mexico can be as simple as walking through a turnstile - nobody asks you to present any identification at all, and in the past one could often return to the United States presenting a simple ID and stating your nationality. Starting on January 31st, however, the United States will no longer accept oral declarations of citizenship so you will have to present one of the forms of officially accepted documents in order to return to the United States. Even if you're just taking a day trip to Tijuana or heading down for a shopping trip and dinner in Nogales or to have a dentist visit in Algodones, you'll need to be sure to take the proper documents.
