Three Kings Day

Friday January 5, 2007
The holidays in Mexico aren't over yet. January 6th is Three Kings Day, known as the Día de Reyes. This is Epiphany on the church calendar, the 12th day after Christmas, when the Magi arrived bearing gifts for baby Jesus. In Mexico children receive gifts on this day, brought by the three kings. It is customary to eat Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread shaped like a wreath, with candied fruit on top, and a figurine of a baby Jesus baked inside. The person who finds the figurine is expected to host a party on Día de la Candelaria, Candlemas, celebrated on February 2nd.

The problem I see in reading your articles is that I want to go and see and do all the things you talk about! Eating is also included! Thanks for the mini getaways provided while I am waiting for my next trip. Ann

I was in Puebla for Dia de Reyes. Amazing to see all the excited children riding their new bicycles and miniature cars. I saw families lined up in the Zocalo for some sort of celebration.
And, I got a ‘baby’ in my slice of Rosca! Guess I will have to bring the tamales on 2 Feb!

Let me know where the party will be - I’ll bring the atole!
