Driving in Mexico

Friday August 25, 2006
For the first few years I lived in Mexico I avoided driving, preferring to put my life in the hands of bus drivers who knew their way around and were more savy about the rules of the road than I. After a while I grew tired of waiting for buses and trying to get on and off of city buses that don't always come to a complete stop. So I took up driving and now I drive confidently because I've become accustomed to the ways of the Mexican road. Like people walking down the street, drivers in Mexico are each just doing their best to get where they need to go and try not to bump into anyone else. Instead of an emphasis on obeying rules and laws, people do what they need to do to get where they want to go. Once you get used to this idea, you can get behind the wheel and may find that driving in Mexico is actually quite efficient.
