On-going Protests in Mexico City

Tuesday August 1, 2006
Over a million supporters of presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (he lost the July 2nd elections by a razor-thin margin) gathered for a third time in Mexico City's Zocalo and surrounding streets on Sunday to demand a recount of the votes - their motto is Voto por voto, casilla por casilla, "vote by vote, polling station by polling station." At this rally, Lopez Obrador informed the crowd that their next plan of action is to camp out in the Zocalo and along Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma street until the electoral tribunal agrees to a full recount. Needless to say, Mexico City traffic is going to be even more chaotic than usual.
