Cozumel's Comeback
40 miles South of Cancun along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula lies Mexico's largest island, Cozumel. Mexico's top diving destination, Cozumel is home to the world's second largest coral reef. The island took a blow when Hurricane Wilma hit in October 2005 and nearly wiped out the island's tourist industry. Even the tourist promotion board suggested visitors hold off on plans to visit the area.
Reconstruction works have been underway for the past 9 months and Cozumel is now back on its feet. Alan Solomon was there recently, and he affirms that Cozumel has been revamped. Hotels, roads and tourist amenities are back in place and ready to receive visitors. In fact, some people think that the hurricane allowed Cozumel to spring back even better than before.
