Presidential Election Cliffhanger
Friday July 7, 2006
Mexico's federal elections took place on July 2nd, with ex-mayor of Mexico City leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (known by his initials as AMLO) coming in with 0.5% fewer votes than conservative candidate Felipe Calderon. Lopez Obrador is going to contest the results and the courts have until September to make a final decision. The new president will be sworn in on December 1st. Meanwhile AMLO has called his supporters to a rally in Mexico City's Zocalo on Saturday. So if you'll be in Mexico City this weekend, expect crowds!
